Mentored on a part-time basis by Darren Cahill along with fitness guru Gil Reyes, since the end of the 2008 season, Verdasco compiled a career-best year.

The Madrid native signalled his intent at the Brisbane International in January, proving he was fitter and sharper than ever before in a run to the final (l. to Stepanek).  Weeks later, he advanced to his first Grand Slam semi-final at the Australian Open, beating Andy Murray and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga before falling to eventual champion Rafael Nadal 6-7(6), 6-4, 7-6(2), 6-7(1), 6-4.

After that result, Verdasco ranked in the Top 10 of the South African Airways 2009 ATP Rankings every week for the rest of season, except for the week of 10 August.

Verdasco reached 14 quarter-finals (or better) in 22 tournaments this year, clinching his third ATP World Tour title at Pilot Pen Tennis in New Haven (d. Querrey) and a runner-up finish at the Proton Malaysian Open, Kuala Lumpur 2009 (l. to Davydenko).

The 25 year old confirmed his spot at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals when his two chief rivals, Robin Soderling and Tsonga, lost their quarter-final matches at the BNP Paribas Masters, the final ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament in Paris.
