Robin Soderling’s self-portrait and autographed racquet have raised $5,100 for charity after bidding closed Thursday on the first Art of Tennis item to be auctioned. The auction ended at 8pm GMT, with 95 bids having been placed.
Fifty per cent of the winning bid will be donated to Save The Children – the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals official charity – with the other half to benefit Soderling’s chosen charity, World Childhood Foundation, founded by H.M. Queen Silvia of Sweden.
"$5,100!!! Congratulations and a big thank you for the help you give to kids in need around the world by bidding on my painting," wrote Soderling on Twitter.
Bidding on Andy Murray, David Ferrer and Tomas Berdych’s self-portraits is already underway, with the remaining four self-portraits of Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Roddick to go under the hammer Friday, 19 November. Murray’s self-portrait still has six days to run and has already attracted a top bid of $4,050.
Tennis fans have the chance to own a unique piece of tennis history via the charity auction, with the artwork created by the world’s top tennis players to celebrate their participation in the 2010 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, being played at The O2 from 21-28 November.
All proceeds from the auction of the one-of-a-kind artworks and autographed racquets used by the players will benefit charity, with 50 per cent of the proceeds going to Save The Children and the other 50 per cent going to each player’s chosen charity.
The artworks will also be displayed in the Fan Zone at The O2 from 21-28 November during the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.
