St. Petersburg is known for its thousands of beautifully preserved historic buildings of a rich architectural mix. Against this backdrop, the St. Petersburg Open began in 1995 when Russian Yevgeny Kafelnikov lifted the trophy. Marat Safin won back-to-back titles in 2000-01 and Andy Murray became the only other winner of consecutive titles in 2007-08.

Tipsarevic Denied - Janko Tipsarevic was denied the chance to become the first player to win the Russian double a week after capturing the Moscow title. The Serbian dropped to a 2-5 mark in ATP World Tour finals.

Simon Stunned - Top seed Gilles Simon missed the chance to make up ground in the battle to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals as he was ousted in the first round by fellow Frenchman Adrian Mannarino.

Youzhny Edged Out - Russian fifth seed Mikhail Youzhny was denied a place in his fourth St. Petersburg Open final. The 29-year-old, who won the title in 2004, was beaten in the semi-finals by Marin Cilic.

Cilic Triumphs Over Tipsarevic
Fourth seed Marin Cilic defeated No. 2 seed Janko Tipsarevic 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 to win his first ATP World Tour title of the season at the St. Petersburg Open. Having finished runner-up in Marseille, Umag and Beijing, Cilic won his first title since repeating as champion in Zagreb in 2010. The win gave the 23 year old his fifth title and third indoors.
