The Last Time... With Jurgen Melzer

DEUCE

Melzer© Wr. Stadthalle/Bildagentur ZollesJurgen Melzer, with President Heinz Fischer on Austrian National Day, has enjoyed a stellar year on both the singles and doubles courts.

Austrian Jurgen Melzer reveals to DEUCE the last time...

I bought tennis balls or rented a tennis court?
The last time I paid for a tennis court was when I actually went for practice with my girlfriend next to my apartment. That was probably two months ago.

I queued for tickets?
Well that’s a long, long time ago; maybe two or three years ago. It was for a soccer game, but it was not in Austria, it was somewhere else.

I lost something important?
This happens a lot of times. The last time I lost something important was my driving license; that was a year ago. I had to go through all the procedures again and I had to go to the police to report it and then you get it back.

“The guy at customs and immigration thought I needed a visa, and he put me in a room for five hours”
I missed a flight?
That was maybe in 2004 or 2005. In the United States, Washington going to San Jose. The guy at customs and immigration thought I needed a visa, which I didn’t, and he put me in a room for five hours then everything got cleared up but I still missed my flight.

I cooked for myself?
Last Tuesday; I made chicken and rice and soup. I don’t cook too often, though, I’m a terrible cook!

I shared a hotel room with another player?
Two years ago probably with Julian Knowle in Indian Wells.

I visited a country for the first time?
I went to Israel for the first time this September and actually I was very surprised how nice that country is.

I asked someone for their autograph?
I asked Real Madrid footballer Raul at the Madrid Open in May. I got a photo too. He’s not my favourite footballer, though, Michael Ballack is.

I forgot a family member or close friend’s birthday?
This happens a lot of times because I’m really bad with birthdays. It was probably my best friend’s birthday this April. I didn’t have to make up for it, though, because he knows me well!

I played a practical joke in the locker room?
I think maybe today, yesterday, to Mr. [Marcin] Matkowski. I just fooled a little bit with him, nothing in particular. I joke around a lot in the locker room.
