From The Editor
To call Roger Federer’s summer ‘amazing’ might be a bit of an understatement. In two short months, the Swiss maestro completed the career Grand Slam, reclaimed the Wimbledon crown and World No. 1 ranking, became the all-time Grand Slam titles leader, and welcomed two beautiful baby girls with wife Mirka. It’s hard to imagine that Federer, who chases a record-tying sixth straight US Open title this fortnight, endured his share of frustration and heartbreak just months earlier.
Agonising losses, misfortunes and missteps are all a part of sport, but the ability to persevere often sets the best apart. In this issue of DEUCE, we feature Andy Roddick, Tommy Haas and Israeli Davis Cup hero Dudi Sela – players who have all shown such resilience in recent months – and profile Max Mirnyi and Andy Ram, a lethal new pairing wrought by unfortunate circumstance.
On a different note, be sure to take a trip down memory lane with Rod Laver as we commemorate the 40th anniversary of his Open Era Grand Slam, and don’t forget to keep your eyes open for the endless parade of celebrities at Flushing Meadows. As Justin Gimelstob notes, there will be plenty!
I hope you enjoy this edition of DEUCE, and I welcome your comments.
