Spaniard Rafael Nadal has returned to training in a bid to be fit for the defence of his Rogers Cup title in Montreal. The ATP World Tour Masters 1000 hard-court tournament begins on 10 August.

Last month Nadal was unable to defend his title at The Championships, Wimbledon, because of tendonitis in both of his knees.

Nadal took part in a light 75-minute practice session with his uncle and coach Toni Nadal, in his hometown of Manacor on the island of Mallorca, on Monday.

“I’m very happy to be back training, get to touch a racquet again and do what I love doing the most,” said Nadal on his official website, RafaelNadal.com. “At the same time, it was just a very light session, without putting too much pressure; just enough to see how I am.

“I still have to be very careful and I think within the next week and a half we will know more. Nevertheless, I’m still very happy.”

The 23 year old has not played a tour-level match since losing to Robin Soderling in the Roland Garros fourth round.

Nadal has won five titles this year, including a sixth Grand Slam championship trophy at the Australian Open in January. He has a 44-5 match record on the 2009 ATP World Tour season.
