Fifth seeds Max Mirnyi and Andy Ram made their team’s US Open debut with a confident 6-3, 6-1 win over Americans Eric Butorac and Scott Lipsky on Wednesday in New York.

The Belarusian and Israeli first teamed up together last October with Ram’s regular partner Jonathan Erlich sidelined with an elbow injury, and have become one of the most formidable tandems – currently No. 6 in the 2009 ATP Doubles Team Rankings. They reached the final at three of the four ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tennis tournament contested on North American hard courts, only failing to do so in Cincinnati where they fell to top seeds Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan in the second round.

Mirnyi won his first Grand Slam title at the US Open in 2000 with Lleyton Hewitt, and reclaimed the title in 2002 with Mahesh Bhupathi. He also was a finalist in 2005-06 with Jonas Bjorkman. Ram made his best event showing in 2005 when he and Erlich reached the quarter-finals.

Erlich and South African Jeff Coetzee fell in their first-round match, as No. 8 seeds Bruno Soares and Kevin Ullyett came back to post a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win. Soares and Ullyett had lost their openers in their first four appearances of the 2009 US Open Series, but broke through last week to reach the Pilot Pen Tennis final (l. to Knowle-Melzer).

Americans Ryan Harrison and Kaes Van’t Hof scored an upset win over No. 6 seeds Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski 6-3, 6-7(1), 7-5. Meanwhile, tenth seeds Frantisek Cermak and Michal Mertinak eased into the second round with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Frank Moser and Florent Serra.

After winning their first-round singles matches in straight sets earlier this week, Americans John Isner and Sam Querrey teamed up for a win in doubles, defeating countrymen Wayne Odesnik and Michael Shabaz 6-3, 6-4.
