Cermak/Mertinak Fall At First Hurdle In St. Petersburg

Top seeds Frantisek Cermak and Michal Mertinak, currently No. 9 in the 2009 year-to-date ATP Doubles Team Rankings, and third seeds Rohan Bopanna and Travis Parrott both made first round exits Wednesday at the St. Petersburg Open.

Israelis Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram contested their third tour-level doubles match this year to knock out Cermak and Mertinak 6-3, 7-6(7) in 86 minutes. Cermak and Mertinak, winner of four doubles titles this year and in contention for a place at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, dropped to a 41-24 mark.

British duo Colin Fleming and Ken Skupski, titlists at the Open de Moselle in Metz, defeated Bopanna and Parrott 7-6(5), 3-6, 10-7 in 90 minutes.

At the Bank Austria TennisTrophy in Vienna, the fourth-seeded Austrian duo of Julian Knowle and Jurgen Melzer opened with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Lukas Dlouhy and Philipp Petzschner. Knowle and Melzer, winners this year in Tokyo and New Haven, reached the final at their home country ATP World Tour 250 tournament in 2006 (l. to Pala/Vizner).

Croatians Marin Cilic and Lovro Zovko also booked their place in the quarter-finals, winning 72 per cent of service points and hitting six aces to beat Spaniards Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez 6-3, 6-2 in 59 minutes.

French duos accounted for two seeded teams Wednesday at the Grand Prix de Tennis de Lyon. Wild cards Arnaud Clement and Sebastien Grosjean upset last week's Stockholm champions and No. 2 seeds Bruno Soares and Kevin Ullyett 6-4, 7-6(1).

Clement and Grosjean are both past singles and doubles champions in Lyon. Clement won the singles crown in 2000 and doubles in 2006 (w/Benneteau), while Grosjean clinched both titles in 2007, teaming up for the doubles triumph with countryman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Also Wednesday, Marc Gicquel and Michael Llodra ousted fourth seeds Simon Aspelin and Paul Hanley 6-3, 6-4. Aspelin and Hanley, who picked up the International German Open title at Hamburg in July, dropped to a 20-15 match record on the year.
