Nestor/Zimonjic Win Paris Opener

Top seeds Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic advanced to the quarter-finals of the BNP Paribas Masters Thursday with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over French wild cards Arnaud Clement and Michael Llodra at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament in Paris (Bercy).

The 2007 runners-up saved the only break points they faced in the 63-minute match and broke serve twice from five opportunities to defeat the 2007 Wimbledon champions. Canadian Nestor and Zimonjic of Serbia are bidding for their fifth ATP World Tour Masters 1000 trophy this season, after titling at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters (d. Bryan-Bryan), the Internazionali BNL d’Italia (d. Bryan-Bryan), the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open (d. Aspelin-Moodie) and the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters (d. Bryan-Bryan).

Nestor and Zimonjic next face Germans Christopher Kas and Philipp Kohlschreiber, who teamed up for a 7-5, 6-4 win over No. 6 seeds Julian Knowle and Andy Ram.

Eighth seeds Frantisek Cermak and Michal Mertinak, champions last week in Valencia, extended their winning streak as they reached the semi-finals with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Jordan Kerr and Travis Parrott. They hit 11 aces and won four of their eight break point chances to secure the win in 64 minutes.

The Czech-Slovakian duo became the seventh team to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, after Wesley Moodie and Dick Norman suffered an opening-round loss Wednesday in Paris. The pair has won five ATP World Tour titles this season, the third best mark behind Nestor and Zimonjic with eight and Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan with six.

The Bryan brothers gained safe passage into the quarter-finals when Jo-Wilfried Tsonga’s wrist injury forced him and partner Julien Benneteau to withdraw prior to the match. The second-seeded Americans will next meet No. 7 seeds Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski, who can clinch the eighth and final Barclays ATP World Tour Finals berth with a win Friday.
