Defending champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga takes on World No. 2 Rafael Nadal in the second quarter-final at the BNP Paribas Masters on Friday. Nadal, who has rallied to reach the quarter-finals with a pair of three-set wins, is 3-1 lifetime against Tsonga. Novak Djokovic, the No. 3 seed, takes a 4-0 mark against No. 9-seeded Swede Robin Soderling when they square off in the first match on Court Central. In the evening session, Frenchman Gael Monfils, the No. 15 seed, plays No. 12 Marin Cilic of Croatia for the first time followed by No. 5 seed Juan Martin del Potro against the Czech Republic’s Radek Stepanek, who upset No. 4 seed Andy Murray on Thursday. Soderling and Tsonga are trying to earn the eighth and final spot for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London. Going into Friday, Spaniard Fernando Verdasco holds it. Soderling must reach the final and Tsonga must win the title in order to take the final position. Tsonga and Monfils mark the first time two Frenchmen have reached the quarter-finals in Bercy since 1992 when Guy Forget and Henri Leconte reached the quarters or better.
