Sampras To Play Verdasco In San Jose Exhibition

Former World No. 1 and 14-time Grand Slam champion Pete Sampras will play at charity exhibition singles match against Top 10 star Fernando Verdasco to kick-off the SAP Open in San Jose on Monday, 8 February at 7 p.m.

Andy Roddick, Radek Stepanek, Tommy Haas, Tomas Berdych, Lleyton Hewitt and Sam Querrey will join Verdasco in the main draw of the ATP World Tour 250 hard-court tennis tournament.

“When you play a current player that's a really good player like Fernando, it's not going to be easy for me,” admitted 38-year-old Sampras, who captured the 1996 and 1997 SAP Open titles.  “I kind of have to get to work here a little bit and hopefully play well.  It's always a good crowd that night, great atmosphere.

“I'm looking forward to playing [Verdasco].  I've seen him playing quite a bit over the last few years, and he's got a big game and he's one of top players in the world.  He serves well, huge forehand.  It's gonna be a competitive match.  That's what I'm hoping for.”
