Former Delray Beach International Tennis Championship champion Kei Nishikori has received a wild card to play in the main draw of the 18th annual tournament, which gets underway Monday, 22 February.
Nishikori reached a career-high No.56 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings in 2009 before a right elbow injury and subsequent surgery ended his season. This will be the first tournament back for the 20-year-old Japanese star. Nishikori was the youngest player in ITC history to win the title, and he was one of four players to win after coming out of the qualifying rounds.
LONG AND SHORT OF IT: In the ATP World Tour event draw is 6-foot, 10-inch Ivo Karlovic, the tallest player in the history of the ATP's Top 100 rankings. Karlovic, who is ranked No. 33 in the world, has led the ATP in aces the last three years and was featured in Sports Illustrated in 2009. Also in the draw is 5-foot, 6-inch Christophe Rochus, the shortest player on the ATP roster. Rochus reached the quarter-finals here a year ago.
AGENOR IN, VILAS OUT: Ronald Agenor, who played 19 years on the ATP World Tour and was nicknamed "The Haitian Sensation," is replacing Guillermo Vilas in the ATP Champions Tour event. Agenor was a quarter-finalist at the French Open where he lost to champion Michael Chang.
TURSUNOV OUT: Russian Dmitry Tursunov has pulled out due to a scheduled second ankle surgery (he has not played in 2010). Also out with injuries are Marc Gicquel and Alejandro Falla. Into the draw are Finn Jarkko Nieminen, veteran Nicolas Lapentti and Dutchman Robin Haase. Lapentti is the cousin of Andres Gomez, who is in the ATP Champions Tour event this week in Delray Beach.
