Schuettler Qualifies For Indian Wells Main Draw

German Rainer Schuettler ensured his place in the BNP Paribas Open main draw for a 10th straight year after rallying past Ecuador’s Giovanni Lapentti 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the final round of qualifying Wednesday in Indian Wells.

Schuettler, who will be the oldest male in the 96-player field at 33 years of age, won four of his eight break point chances to close out the match in just under two hours. He also successfully qualified for the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament in 2007 and ’08, and each time bowed out in the first round.

The former World No. 5 has enjoyed past success in the desert, reaching the semi-finals in 2003 (l. to Kuerten) and the quarter-finals in 2002, (l. to Sampras).

Out of the seven Americans in action Wednesday, only two managed to qualify for the main draw. Bobby Reynolds defeated countryman Lester Cook 6-4, 7-5, while Tim Smyczek dismissed 18-year-old Serbian wild card Filip Krajinovic 6-1, 6-0.

Donald Young came up on the losing end of a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(8) battle against Australian Marinko Matosevic. Meanwhile, South African Kevin Anderson accounted for Ryan Sweeting 6-3, 7-6(7); Argentine Brian Dabul knocked out Kevin Kim 6-1, 6-4; and Yen-Hsun Lu eased past Jesse Witten 6-2, 6-1.

A pair of Brazilians, Ricardo Mello and Thiago Alves, advanced with three-sets wins. Rounding out the qualifers were German Bjorn Phau, Paraguay’s Ramon Delgado and Austrian Stefan Koubek.
