The Argentine has won two of the previous three meetings but the Spaniard prevailed in their last encounter in the fourth round of Indian Wells last year (saving five match points).

In the second match, No. 6 seed and 2004 champion Andy Roddick meets the top player from Ukraine Sergiy Stakhovsky for the first time. Roddick leads the ATP World Tour with 21 match wins.
