Hewitt, Gonzalez, Bryans Headline Houston Weeknight Schedule

A preliminary schedule for several nights during the US Men’s Clay Court Championship April 5-11 at River Oaks Country Club has been announced. Among the matches that have already been scheduled are those involving defending singles champion Lleyton Hewitt, top seed Fernando Gonzalez and defending doubles champions Bob and Mike Bryan.

The Bryans will begin their title defense as part of the Tuesday night session, which will begin at 6 p.m. Hewitt’s title defense, which is also his first action since undergoing hip surgery after the Australian Open, will begin during the Wednesday night session. Gonzalez, the tournament’s top seed and the No. 11 player in the world, will be part of the Thursday night session.

As Hewitt and Gonzalez are among the top four seeds, they receive byes and will begin the tournament with a second round match. Americans John Isner and Sam Querrey are also among the top four seeds and will have byes as well.

Players who will be playing first round matches over Monday and Tuesday include former champions Mardy Fish and Ivo Karlovic along with Americans Taylor Dent, Rajeev Ram and Houston resident Michael Russell.

The singles main draw will be made during the late afternoon on Friday, April 2, while the doubles draw will be made during the evening on Saturday, April 3.

Daily orders of play will be released each evening for the following day. Play will begin at noon on weekdays, with night sessions beginning at 6 p.m. On Saturday, April 10, the singles semifinals will be played consecutively from 1 p.m., while the doubles final will begin not before 6 p.m. The singles final will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 11.

The preliminary schedule for Hewitt, Gonzalez and the Bryans is subject to change depending on the composition of the draw.
