Roger Federer failed in his bid to reach the doubles semi-finals of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia Friday as he and partner Yves Allegro were beaten by towering American duo John Isner and Sam Querrey 6-4, 6-4 at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 clay-court tennis tournament in Rome.

Isner and Querrey broke serve three times from five opportunities and saved two of the three break points they faced to defeat their Swiss opponents in 65 minutes. The Americans are through to their third ATP World Tour semi-final of the season; they went on to clinch their first title together in Memphis (d. Hutchins-Kerr).

For a place in the final Isner and Querrey will face South American pairing Pablo Cuevas and Juan Monaco, who defeated Italian wild cards Simone Bolelli and Potito Starace by the same score line.

Seventh seeds Lukasz Kubot and Oliver Marach earned their place in the semi-finals courtesy of a 6-3, 6-4 victory over third seeds Lukas Dlouhy and Leander Paes. The Polish-Austrian duo converted four of the seven break point chances they created to prevail in 76 minutes.

Kubot and Marach, who qualified for the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals last year, are bidding to reach their fourth ATP World Tour final of the year. In February, they reached three successive finals during the Latin American “Golden Swing”, titling at the Movistar Open in Santiago (d. Starace-Zeballos) and the Abierto Mexicano Telcel (d. Fognini-Starace) in Acapulco.

Next up for Kubot and Marach are No. 2 seeds Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan, champions here in 2008 and runners-up in 2005, 2007 and 2009. On Friday the American twins overcame a spirited challenge from Spaniards Nicolas Almagro and Marcel Granollers, 6-3, 3-6, 10-6.

The Bryans are 5-0 lifetime against Kubot-Marach, their most recent win coming in the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London last November.
