The quarter-finals on Friday feature World No. 2 and 2008 champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia along with four Spaniards, led by No. 3 and four-time Rome winner Rafael Nadal. This is the first time since 2005 at the Foro Italico that four Spaniards are in the quarter-finals.
For the second day in a row, Djokovic opens on Campo Centrale as he takes on No. 6 seed Fernando Verdasco. Djokovic is 5-3 lifetime against the Spaniard but Verdasco won the last meeting in the semi-finals at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters two weeks ago.
In the second match, No. 7 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France takes on No. 13 David Ferrer for the first time. The Spaniard leads the ATP World Tour with a 21-3 clay court record this season and his 27 overall match wins also leads the circuit.
In the third match, Nadal brings a 4-0 lifetime mark against Swiss No. 2 Stanislas Wawrinka. Nadal has a 24-1 career mark in Rome. In the night session, 21-year-old Latvian Ernests Gulbis, who is the youngest player left, takes on unseeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez.
Of the remaining players, only Nadal (16), Djokovic (5) and Tsonga (1) have won an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title during their career.
FEDERER EYES DOUBLES SEMI-FINALS – The wild card duo of Yves Allegro and Roger Federer take on Americans John Isner and Sam Querrey in the quarter-finals on Friday. This is Federer's first doubles quarter-final in Rome since 2003. It’s also Federer's first doubles quarter-final since the Beijing Olympics in August ‘08 when he teamed with Stanislas Wawrinka to capture the gold medal. Federer is trying to reach his first doubles semi-final in an ATP World Tour tournament since June 2005 in Halle where he captured the title (w/Allegro).
