Third round action on Thursday features six of the top eight seeds, led by No. 2 and 2008 champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia, No. 3 and four-time Rome winner Rafael Nadal of Spain, No. 4 Andy Murray of Scotland and No. 5 Robin Soderling of Sweden. The lone Italian remaining is wild card Filippo Volandri, who attempts to reach the Rome quarter-finals for the third time. In the opening match on Campo Centrale, Djokovic, who is 12-2 lifetime in Rome, meets top Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci for the first time. Bellucci is trying to post his first career Top 10 win (0-5).
In the second match, 21-year-old Latvian Ernests Gulbis, who is the youngest player remaining, takes a 1-0 lead against Volandri. Both players have beaten World No. 1 Roger Federer in Rome; Volandri three years ago and Gulbis on Tuesday. In the third match, No. 13 seed David Ferrer, who leads the ATP World Tour with a 20-3 clay court record this season (most wins), is 1-1 against Murray. In the evening session, Nadal brings his 23-1 career mark at the Foro Italico and 3-0 lifetime record against Victor Hanescu of Romania. On Pietrangeli, No. 5 seed Robin Soderling of Sweden, No. 6 Fernando Verdasco of Spain, No. 7 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France and No. 11 Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia, look to reach the quarter-finals.
