ATP stars Andreas Seppi, Leander Paes and Jeremy Chardy visited the Vatican on Wednesday to attend the weekly Mass led by Pope Benedict XVI in St. Peter’s Square.

The players and their guests gathered on site early, eager to make their way to the Vatican, and were in St. Peter’s Square by 10:30 am in time for the service. Courtesy of a formal invitation from the Vatican, the group of 15 sat less than 10 metres from the Pope’s altar.

“This is a magical place,” said Paes. “This experience of seeing the Pope from so close will be something I will cherish for the rest of my life. I am very happy I had the chance to come to the Vatican today.”

The Pope addressed the congregation in six different languages (Italian, English, German, Portuguese, Spanish and Polish) and saluted the players from his chair after the Vatican announced their presence via the public sound system.

“It was an amazing experience,” said Chardy. “I always wanted to see one Mass at the Vatican and I am happy I had the opportunity to do it this year. Yesterday I had a tough day, losing in singles and doubles, so I am happy to have a much better day today.”
