Estoril Open – World No. 1 Federer, Portuguese Duo Lead Quarter-final Line-Up
World No. 1 Roger Federer will try to stay perfect at the Estoril Open on Friday as he - and seven others - battle for semi-final spots at the ATP World Tour 250 clay court tournament. Federer won five matches to take the title two years ago and now, in his second appearance, has improved to 6-0 here with a win in his opening round.
In the first match on Central, he will face former Top 10 Frenchman Arnaud Clement, who made it to a career-high No. 10 in 2001. He is currently ranked No. 83. In January he showed he can still go deep on the ATP World Tour, making it to the final in Auckland (l. to Isner). Clement has also beaten Federer in three of their nine previous meetings, although his wins all came between 1999 and 2001, and the Swiss has won their last five meetings.
Second on Central is an all-unseeded but all-Portuguese duel between Frederico Gil and Rui Machado. The winner guarantees a native player in the semis for the first time in tournament history (since 1990). They haven't played each other on the ATP World Tour but Gil has won all of their meetings on other levels (Challengers and Futures). The home nation's No. 1 and 2 players are Machado at No. 114 and Gil at No. 133.
The other two quarter-final match-ups are on Centralito, beginning with No. 4 seed and defending champion Albert Montanes against No. 8 seed Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay. The pair have split their previous four meetings, all on clay. Montanes could be fresher though, having spent only 56 minutes on the singles court this week (he had a first round bye and won his second round match 61 62) while Cuevas has spent four hours and six minutes on the singles court (two long victories).
Next is No. 5 seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez against qualifier Alberto Martin in an all-Spanish match-up, with Garcia-Lopez winning their only previous meeting last year on hard courts in Stockholm.
BMW Open – Top Six Seeds Advance To Quarter-finals FOr First Time Since 1974
The top six seeds are in the quarter-finals at the BMW Open by FWU RETAKAFUL for the first time since 1974. That year the top seven were in the quarters in Munich. Leading the way is top seed Marin Cilic of Croatia, No. 2 and last year’s finalist Mikhail Youzhny of Russia, No. 3 and defending champ Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic, No. 4 and top German Philipp Kohlschreiber, No. 5 Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus and No. 6 Nicolas Almagro of Spain. The other quarter-finalists are German Philipp Petzschner and Czech Republic native Jan Hajek.
In the first match of the day, Youzhny looks for his second win against Hajek this season. Hajek is appearing in his first career ATP World Tour quarter-final and Youzhny is making his fourth showing in a quarter-final (or better).
In the second match, Berdych takes a 2-0 mark against Petzschner, having won both of last year’s matches in three sets on hard courts. Berdych is appearing in his sixth ATP World Tour quarter-final (or better) this year.
In the third match, Baghdatis brings a 3-2 record against Kohlschreiber and this is their fourth straight meeting on German soil. Kohlschreiber won both previous meetings on clay (’07 Munich, ’07 Hamburg). Baghdatis enters with a 20-9 match record and last season he didn’t win his 20th match until the final tournament he played in October in Stockholm, where he captured the title.
In the final match, Cilic takes on Almagro for the second time. Two years ago he defeated the Spaniard in the first round at the Australian Open. The 21-year-old Croat is one of five players to win two ATP World Tour titles this season and he enters with a 23-6 match record on the year. This is the Croat’s fifth quarter-final (or better) this year, the first since Dubai in late February.
Serbia Open – Serbian Trio, American Duo Lead Quarter-final Action
A trio of Serbs and a pair of rising American stars are among the eight players in action on Friday at the Serbia Open.
First up on Centre Court is No. 2 seed John Isner against Richard Gasquet. The Frenchman won the pair's only previous meeting, but it was a long three-setter on hard courts last year. Gasquet, a former Top 10 player, is 7-5 on clay while Isner is 2-5 this season.
The only all-seed match-up is second on, as No. 4 Stanislas Wawrinka faces No. 6 Viktor Troicki. Wawrinka won the pair's only previous meeting last year on the clay of Monte Carlo and hasn't lost to a non-Top 20 player all year (he is 16-0 against them) but Troicki has been impressive this week, reaching the quarter-finals while only losing games in two matches.
No. 3 seed Sam Querrey plays Igor Andreev next, with their head-to-head tied at 1-1. This will be their first meeting on clay though, a surface Andreev has thrived on (reaching seven of his nine career ATP World Tour finals on this surface) while Querrey is 13-20 although he did reach his first ATP World Tour clay court final last month in Houston.
In the evening match, it’s an all-Serb encounter between top seed and World No. 2 Novak Djokovic and wild card Filip Krajinovic. Djokovic has been No. 2 every week since Feb. 1 this year and he enters with a 21-6 match record on the season (8-2 on clay). Krajinovic is on the rise, and at 18 years, two months, he is the youngest player this year to reach an ATP World Tour quarter-final and winning his first two ATP World Tour-level matches to reach this round. Djokovic won the title here in its inaugural year last season (d. Kubot).
