The quarter-finals of the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open on Friday feature a trio of former tournament winners – World No. 1 Roger Federer (2006, ’09), No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal (2005) and No. 3 seed Andy Murray (2008). The two other seeds left are No. 9 David Ferrer and No. 12 Gael Monfils. A trio of unseeded players making their first quarter-final showing in Madrid are Ernests Gulbis of Latvia, Jurgen Melzer of Austria and Nicolas Almagro of Spain.
In the first men’s quarter-final, Nadal, who is undefeated on clay this season (12-0), takes a 5-1 career mark against Monfils. In the evening session, Federer looks to avenge his second round loss to Gulbis in Rome two weeks ago. They have split their two meetings. In the final match, Ferrer, who owns the most match wins (32) on the ATP World Tour this season, brings a 2-1 mark against Murray. On Arantxa Sanchez Vicario Court, Melzer and Almagro meet for the first time with the winner advancing to their first career ATP World Tour Masters 1000 semi-final.
