The third round at the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open on Thursday is highlighted by World No. 1 and defending champion Roger Federer, No. 2 seed and last year’s finalist Rafael Nadal along with No. 6 seed and Madrid native Fernando Verdasco on Manolo Santana Court.
On Arantxa Sanchez Vicario Court, No. 3 seed Andy Murray looks to reach his third straight quarter-final in Madrid as he takes on Romanian Victor Hanescu.
In the first men’s match on Santana, Verdasco takes a 5-1 lifetime mark against top Austrian Jurgen Melzer. Verdasco won the previous two meetings in the past two months in three sets.
In the next match, big-serving American No. 13 seed John Isner faces Nadal for the second time this season. On Mar. 17, the Spaniard prevailed in three sets in the fourth round at ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Indian Wells.
In the evening session, Federer battles countryman and No. 15 seed Stanislas Wawrinka. Federer has won three of the previous four meetings but Wawrinka prevailed in their only clay court encounter last year in Monte-Carlo.
DOWN TO 16 – There are 10 countries represented in the third round, led by host Spain with six players followed by Switzerland (2), Argentina, Austria, Croatia, France, Latvia, Romania, Scotland, and United States with one each.
