Nestor-Zimonjic Survive First-Round Scare

Paris, France

Second seeds Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic survived a scare as they advanced to the second round at Roland Garros. The Canadian-Serbian duo dropped the second set to Ross Hutchins and Jordan Kerr before sealing victory in a third-set tie-break, 7-6(5), 4-6, 7-6(3).

Nestor and Zimonjic, who won clay-court titles in Monte-Carlo and Barcelona during the European clay-court season, finished runners-up to Pablo Cuevas and Luis Horna in the 2008 Roland Garros final.

Eighth-seeded Poles Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski opened their campaign with a 7-6(4), 6-2 victory over countrymen Tomasz Bednarek and Mateusz Kowalczyk. Fyrstenberg and Matkowski, who are yet to reach a tour-level final this season, saved all five break points they faced, while converting both opportunities they created in the 71-minute match.

Brazilian duo Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares earned a second-round meeting with top seeds Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan after battling past Argentine pairing Juan Ignacio Chela and Eduardo Schwank 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.

Two seeded teams were upset in the first round as No. 7 Simon Aspelin and Paul Hanley and No. 11 Marcel Granollers and Tommy Robredo both bowed out. Frenchmen Marc Gicquel and Edouard Roger-Vasselin accounted for Aspelin-Hanley 2-6, 6-4, 7-8(8), while Australian-Brazilian pairing Stephen Huss and Andre Sa dismissed Granollers-Robredo 7-6(5), 7-5.

Defending champions Lukas Dlouhy and Leander Paes will face Yves Allegro and Andreas Beck in the second round after the Swiss-German duo defeated Philipp Marx and Igor Zelenay 7-6(1), 6-3.
