Defending champion Roger Federer continued his near flawless run at Roland Garros as he defeated Stanislas Wawrinka 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-2 in an all-Swiss fourth-round clash Sunday in Paris.
In a repeat of the 2009 final, Federer will face fifth seed Robin Soderling in the quarter-finals. Federer takes a perfect 12-0 record into the clash with Soderling, having since defeated the right-hander in the fourth round at Wimbledon and the US Open quarter-finals. Should the 28-year-old Federer once again get the better of his Swedish opponent, he will extend his own record of consecutive Grand Slam semi-final appearances by reaching his 24th.

"Obviously I think he's taken advantage of the better ranking he's had since the last year here," said Federer, looking ahead to the clash. "We have experience playing against each other. I've never lost against him, so obviously that's a good record to have. But because of the improvements he's made, he's an opponent not to underestimate. Obviously he beat incredible players on the way to make the finals here last year, so clay seems to also become really his surface of preference, as well."
Soderling said: "It's a quarter-final of a Grand Slam, and I have to play either one of the top four guys. Of course it's tough to play against Roger, but they are all tough matches. I hope for a good match. It's always fun to play against him.
"I remember a few times I played against him when I came pretty close, especially one in Halle a couple years ago when I served and returned really well. I think that's what you have to do against him, because of course he's the best player in the world. But even against him you will always get a few chances. Then you have to take them, because he won't give you any second opportunities. You really have to play well in the important points, which he does so well, and that's why he's so good."
The top seeded Federer is yet to drop a set en route to the quarter-finals and was once again in top form as he improved to a 5-1 record against Wawrinka, with whom he won an Olympic Games gold medal in the Beijing doubles competition two years ago.
Federer broke serve twice in the opening set, closing out a one-set lead with a forehand crosscourt winner in the ninth game. However, the Swiss could not maintain his momentum and in a rare lapse of concentration at the beginning of the second set, Wawrinka was able to take advantage of errors from the Federer racquet to engineer a service break.
No. 20 seed Wawrinka was not able to keep up his improved level of play, though, and a loose service game at 4-3 allowed Federer to draw level. Federer then demonstrated why he has a vastly superior tie-break record to Wawrinka (273-144 compared with 56-76) as he rallied from a mini-break down to seal a two-set lead.
In a one-sided third set, Federer broke twice in the third and fifth games as he raced to victory in just under two hours.
"[I'm] very happy because seeing the draw 10 days ago, got my nerves going already thinking of who I was going to play maybe the first round, and then see who my first few seeds were. Now I played my first seed in the tournament, and a good friend, as well. I really knew the danger in this match. I could have lost definitely a couple sets on the way, against [Alejandro] Falla, for instance, or today against Stan.
"I was able to hang in there and turn it around in the breaker, but that's the stuff you need to do. As long as you come through, I always say it's a great tournament. I'm playing really well at the moment, so I'm very happy where my game is at right now."
Federer, who has won a record 16 Grand Slam championship titles, is looking to become the first player to defend a major title since he himself did so at the US Open (d. Murray) two years ago.
Soderling jumped for joy and punched the air in celebration after completing a comprehensive 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 victory over No. 10 seed Marin Cilic of Croatia in just one hour and 41 minutes.
The 25-year-old Soderling dropped serve in the third game of the first set, before winning four straight games for a 5-2 lead. Cilic, at 4-5, dropped his serve to 15 to gift Soderling the 30-minute opener.
Soderling, who finished runner-up to Fernando Verdasco at the Barcelona Open BancSabadell last month, went on to convert his second set point opportunity at 5-4 in the second set when Cilic hit a double fault.
Three breaks of serve in the fourth, sixth and eighth games gave Soderling his 25th win of the season and a 13th career meeting with Federer in the last eight.
"I think you're always expecting a tough match, whoever you play against," said Soderling. "Against Cilic, we never played before, but he's a great server. Against guys like him, it's almost always tough.
"But I think the conditions were a little bit tough today. It was windy; it was cold; it was tough to really get in a rhythm. But I think what was the biggest difference between us is I think I served better than him. I had more first serves in, and I was able to dictate play with my forehand a little bit more."
Cilic, 21, fell to Andy Murray in the Roland Garros fourth round last year. He is a winner of two ATP World Tour titles this year at the Aircel Chennai Open (d. Wawrinka) and PBZ Zagreb Indoors (d. Berrer).
