“It’s been a long time,” said Baghdatis, who won his last match at Roland Garros. “I didn’t win a match on grass. It’s been two months I didn’t win a match. It’s a long time. It feels good winning a match, even without playing good. The positive attitude is there which is very important, and I’m looking forward to the next one.”

Baghdatis, who advances to the Los Angeles quarter-finals for the first time in three event appearances, will take a 2-0 record into his next match against sixth-seeded Serbian Janko Tipsarevic.

Tipsarevic needed two hours and 13 minutes to defeat Indian Somdev Devvarman 7-6(9), 6-2 in his second-round match Wednesday. The Serbian, a finalist last month in ‘s-Hertogenbosch (l. to Stakhovsky), will be contesting his fourth quarter-final of the season.

German veteran Rainer Schuettler knocked out American Robby Ginepri 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to become the first player to reach the quarter-finals. Ginepri had the better share of chances against his 34-year-old opponent, whom he was playing for the first time since 2003, but managed to convert on just two of his 11 break points while Schuettler won three of his seven opportunities.

Schuettler, a former World No. 5, will next meet defending champion and No. 2 seed Sam Querrey, who regrouped to defeat South African Kevin Anderson 7-6(8), 4-6, 6-0 in the night session.

Querrey defeated Schuettler last month in the Queen’s Club semi-finals en route to his first grass-court title, becoming the only player this season to clinch three ATP World Tour titles on as many surfaces. He also won on clay at Belgrade and on hard court in Memphis.
