Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi, who partners Rohan Bopanna on the ATP World Tour doubles circuit, has been bestowed one of the highest honours by his country, after it was announced on Pakistan's Independence Day that he will receive the Sitara-e-Imtiaz (Star of Excellence) Award from the Pakistan Government.

The award, the third highest honour given to civilian or military personnel in Pakistan, will be presented to 30-year-old Qureshi by the Pakistani President on Pakistan Day, 23 March, 2011.

Qureshi will become one of three sporting personalities in Pakistan to win the award, joining national heroes Imran Khan (cricket) and Janghir Khan (squash).

"It means a lot, to be on the list with Imran Khan and Janghir Khan, who are sporting legends in cricket and squash respectively around the world," said Qureshi, who is competing this week at the Pilot Pen Tennis in New Haven. "It is a great honour for my family, and it helps my cause of promoting tennis in Pakistan. It is a special moment and one that I will always cherish."

Qureshi became the first Pakistani to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final when he partnered Bopanna at Wimbledon this year. He was awarded the Pride of Pakistan in 2005 by the Pakistan Government and the ATP’s Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award in 2002.

Rashid Malik, a former Pakistan No. 1 and Davis Cup captain, will receive the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz for his services to Pakistani tennis.
