No. 16 seeds Rohan Bopanna and Aisam Ul-Haq-Qureshi reached their second successive Grand Slam quarter-final Sunday as they ousted No. 2 seeds Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic 6-3, 6-4 in the US Open third round.
The Indian-Pakistani duo, who lost out to eventual champions Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner in the Wimbledon quarter-finals in June, had never won a US Open match together prior to their 2010 campaign.
DEUCE: Bridging A Great Divide (May 2010)
Defeat for World No. 2 Nestor and Zimonjic compounds a run of disappointing results for the Canadian-Serbian pairing. Since winning the Roland Garros crown in early June, they have compiled a 7-7 match record, including a second-round defeat at Wimbledon (l. to Eaton-Inglot).
Bopanna and Qureshi next will face No. 10 seeds Wesley Moodie and Dick Norman, who cruised past Brazilians Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares 6-2, 6-2. The South African-Belgian pairing are looking to reach their third major semi-final of the season after reaching the last four at Roland Garros (l. to Nestor-Zimonjic) and Wimbledon (l. to Melzer-Petzschner).
Ninth-seeded Poles Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski comfortably advanced to the quarter-finals with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over French-German partnership Jeremy Chardy and Christopher Kas.
