Bryan Brothers Start Strong; Wimby Champs Fall

New York, U.S.A.

Top seeds Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan extended their winning streak to nine matches after claiming a 6-3, 6-2 win over Alexandr Dolgopolov and Bjorn Phau Wednesday night at the US Open. The Bryans, US Open champions in 2005 and 2008, are making their 16th consecutive appearance at Flushing Meadows.

The 32-year-old twins are chasing their second Grand Slam title of the year, having won the Australian Open in January. They are also looking for their fourth title from their past five outings, following title runs in Los Angeles, Toronto and Cincinnati.

One day after the shock exit of defending US Open champions Leander Paes and Lukas Dlouhy, reigning Wimbledon champions Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner crashed out in the first round Wednesday, falling to Kevin Anderson and Victor Hanescu 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(1).

Fourth seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi, finalists in the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati two weeks ago, opened their US Open campaign with a strong 6-1, 6-4 win over Frenchmen Arnaud Clement and Nicolas Mahut.

Mardy Fish and Mark Knowles, the 15th seeds, rallied from a set down to defeat Spaniards Marc Lopez and Pere Riba 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
