Monfils Celebrates Birthday With Third Round Spot

World No. 19 Gael Monfils was the first player to advance to the third round of the US Open, celebrating his 24th birthday by defeating Russian Igor Andreev 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 on Wednesday in New York.
The Frenchman struck 11 aces and hit nearly twice as many winners as Andreev (36 to 19) as he wrapped up victory in just under two hours. He is through to the third round of a Grand Slam for the third time this season (also the Australian Open and Wimbledon), and will look to reach the round of 16 at Flushing Meadows for the third year in a row.
In remaining first-round action, Russian No. 12 seed Mikhail Youzhny was a comfortable 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 winner over Kazakhstan’s Andrey Golubev. The 28-year-old Youzhny lost serve once, but hit back by capitalising on six of nine break point opportunities to seal victory in one hour and 37 minutes.
Youzhny, a quarter-finalist at Roland Garros (l. to Berdych) in May, recorded his best Grand Slam performance at the US Open in 2006, defeating then-World No. 2 Rafael Nadal to reach the semi-finals, where he lost out to Andy Roddick in four sets.
