A Different Celebration: After winning the mixed doubles title with Bob Bryan, Liezel Huber joked, “He wants to chest bump, chest bump, chest bump. I'm like, no. Do it with your girlfriend; don't chest bump me. No, just joking. (Laughter.) No, we don't chest bump. I'm just scared like I will hurt myself.”
A Month In The Life: Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan offer a glimpse into their lives in their CNN video diary, sharing footage from the courts, airport and music gigs at tour stops in Toronto, Cincinnati and New York. Andy Murray makes a cameo twice during the video, first when the Bryans ask in the Toronto locker room, “You make 10 million a year. Why are you driving to Cincinnati?” and later upon their arrival in Cincinnati. Watch the video
All Aboard The Indo-Pak Express: The Indian-Pakistani team of Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi have caught the attention of newspapers worldwide by advancing to the US Open doubles final. Under the headline, ‘Peace on the doubles court’, the Montreal Gazette writes: “Sometimes sport goes beyond borders and wars, and sends a message of peace. And the march to the men's doubles final by Rohan Bopanna of India and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi of Pakistan has accomplished just that.”
Among the other headlines: India-Pakistan pairing shows anything is possible (AP), India's Bopanna, Pakistan's Qureshi advance more than their tennis fortunes (Los Angeles Times), Pakistan-India peace pair advances to US Open final (AFP), 'Indo Pak Express' tennis duo serve up peace and hope (Globe and Mail).
UN ambassadors, India’s Hardeep Singh Puri and Pakistan’s Abdullah Hussain Haroon, sat side by side during the semi-finals and will return for the match Friday. According the Times of India, social networking sites have lit up with messages encouraging Indian and Pakistani fans to buy a ticket for the doubles final.
Djokovic A Big Hit: Seventeen-year-old American Jack Sock, who made his US Open men’s draw debut last week, entered a friendly competition during a hitting session with Novak Djokovic this week – playing a tie-break for push-ups. Though the World No. 3 proved out of his league, Sock was given an out. “He told me that I didn't have to do the push-ups because I had a match later,” Sock wrote in his USOpen.org blog. “Nice guy!” His time practicing with Djokovic has paid off in the US Open junior championships: Sock is through the quarter-finals without the loss of a set.
Sock hasn’t been the only player to practice with Djokovic this week. Women’s top seed Caroline Wozniacki (@CaroWozniacki) tweeted on Thursday: “Had a fantastic day with the whole djokovic team in New Jersey where they are staying in a nice house. And hit with Novak for 40 min, was fun”
Quote Of The Day: “I’m happy I won that match and reaching the semi-finals is a good result, but now that I’m here I want more. I’m ready to be the bad person [who prevents Nadal from advancing to a possible final with Federer]. I’d love to be the bad person in this case.” – Mikhail Youzhny
Celebrity Sightings: Charlize Theron, Josh Brolin, Evan Lysacek, Kim Kardashian, Christie Brinkley and Alessandra Ambrosio were among the celebrities in attendance Thursday at the US Open.
