US Open Hottest Ticket In Town: A-list celebrities continue to flock to Flushing Meadows to take in the action at the US Open. Singers Gavin Rossdale and Gwen Stefani were in Roger Federer’s box to watch the Swiss beat Jurgen Melzer on Monday night, while actress Cameron Diaz watched from the stands. Following them on Tuesday evening were baseball Hall of Fame legend Henry Aaron, after he was honoured at the USTA's 'Breaking the Barriers' ceremony, fellow Hall of Famer Frank Robinson, actor Alec Baldwin and former NBA star Rick Fox.
Battle On Ashe: At four hours and 28 minutes, Tuesday’s match between Stanislas Wawrinka and Sam Querrey clocked in as the second longest match of the tournament, behind the second-round match between Kei Nishikori and Marin Cilic that lasted four hours and 59 minutes, and was also the longest match on Arthur Ashe Stadium during the 2010 US Open. It was just the second match to go to five sets on the 23,000-seat show court, following Novak Djokovic’s come-from-behind win over fellow Serbian Viktor Troicki in first-round action last Tuesday. Of the 16 men’s singles matches contested on Ashe through Monday, 13 had been decided in straight sets.
Tweet of the Day: The fans at Arthur Ashe Stadium weren’t the only was caught up in the Wawrinka-Querrey drama. Dan Farrugia (@dantheintern), who interned for Querrey last summer and currently a student at Cornell University, tweeted during the match: “If I fail out of law school @SamQuerrey better rehire me...his epic is the reason I am not paying any attention in Torts”

The Winning Shot: Fernando Verdasco lost the first two sets, conceded an early break in the fifth set, and trailed 1-4 in the decisive tie-break… and still came up with the win over fellow Spaniard David Ferrer in another five-set classic. The most memorable moment of the four-hour, 23-minute battle fittingly came on match point. After hitting a backhand from deep behind the court, Verdasco scrambled to chase down a drop shot at the net. Still sliding from his sprint, Verdasco watched as his forehand went just around the net post in front of the umpire’s chair and landed perfectly within the lines for the winner.
Oh Captain, My Captain: Former Davis Cup teammates Jim Courier and Todd Martin have both expressed their interest in taking over the U.S. captaincy after Patrick McEnroe steps down later this month. Martin told The New York Post: “I'd be interested in the job and following up what Patrick has built. I'd be disappointed if they already know what they're doing because there's a lot of good candidates out there. I hope they reach out." Meanwhile, Courier said, "I would be honored to be considered. It's near and dear to my heart. Patrick has gotten the best players to play the past decade and he's created a great camaraderie."
Courier was a member of the Davis Cup squad from 1991-99, while Martin represented the U.S. from 1994-2002. They were both members of the 1995 team that defeated Russia 3-2 in the final.
