World No. 5 Robin Soderling overcame a slow start to book his place in the US Open quarter-finals with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Spanish No. 21 seed Albert Montanes on Monday in New York.

The 26-year-old Soderling is through to the last eight at Flushing Meadows for the second year in a row and faces a rematch with Roger Federer, whom he extended to four sets in the same round last year.

The Swede won just two matches during the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati in the lead up to the US Open, but after coming through a testing five-set match in the first round against qualifier Andreas Haider-Maurer, has rediscovered his best form as he bids to reach the semi-finals in New York for the first time.

Aside from a disappointing first-round exit at the Australian Open (l. to Granollers), Soderling has enjoyed another stellar season at the majors, reaching the Roland Garros final for the second straight year before advancing to his first quarter-final at Wimbledon, losing to Rafael Nadal on both occasions.

Soderling said that he was happy to be improving with each match. “I think my first match here was not so good. Then I think I played better and better for every match. I still have some things to improve before I can say I play really well."

Soderling added that he is relishing the chance to play Federer in a replay of their US Open quarter-final one year ago. “It's always a very nice feeling to play against the world's best. You know, it's matches like that you train for. It's matches like that I've been dreaming of playing since I started playing tennis, playing at the big courts in the big tournaments. It's very fun."
