Youzhny Ready To Play US Open Villain

Russian Mikhail Youzhny said that he wants to be the villain who prevents a fan-favourite US Open final between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. Youzhny rallied to beat Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka 3-6, 7-6(7), 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 to reach the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows, where he will meet top seed Rafael Nadal.
“I’m happy I won that match and reaching the semi-finals is a good result, but now that I’m here I want more. I’m ready to be the bad person [who prevents Nadal from advancing to a possible final with Federer]. I’d love to be the bad person in this case.”
Youzhny has a relatively respectable 4-7 record against the World No. 1 and defeated him in the quarter-finals of the US Open in 2006 in their only meeting at Flushing Meadows.
The Russian has had a remarkable reversal in form on the US hard court season. Prior to the US Open he had lost in the second round in Toronto and the first round in Cincinnati.
Wawrinka said that when he has time to reflect on his US Open campaign he’ll be happy with his first appearance in a Grand Slam quarter-final. “If I go back, I'm very pleased the tournament,” he said. “That's true, but just an hour after losing in five sets it's always difficult to find all the positive things.
“I know especially against Andy Murray was I think my best match, and I was playing really, really strong. For the rest of the season and for sure next year, it's gonna be, I hope, more tournaments with that level.”
