World No. 14 Mikhail Youzhny reached the US Open quarter-finals for the second time Tuesday as he held off Tommy Robredo’s challenge to defeat the Spaniard 7-5, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 on Louis Armstrong Stadium.

The 28-year-old Youzhny struck a staggering 50 winners and converted four of 12 break points to fend off Robredo’s late fight back and seal victory in just over three hours. Youzhny also defeated Robredo in the US Open round of 16 in 2006, when he went on to post his best Grand Slam result by reaching the semi-finals (l. to Roddick).

The 12th-seeded Youzhny endured disappointing results during the Olympus US Open Series, but had performed very well in the first six months of the season. The Muscovite won his sixth ATP World Tour title in Munich (d. Cilic), finished runner-up in Rotterdam (l. to Soderling) and Dubai (l. to Djokovic), and reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros (l. to Berdych).

"I think it's the first time I have reached two quarter-finals in Grand Slams in the same year," said Youzhny. "It maybe means I am starting to play a little bit more consistently, not only really, really good some tournaments and afterwards not so well. I hope I improve my game a little bit before the next match."

The No. 41-ranked Robredo, one of six Spaniards to reach the fourth round at Flushing Meadows, was bidding to reach his first major quarter-final since 2009 Roland Garros.

Youzhny next will face Swiss No. 25 seed Stanislas Wawrinka, who ended American hopes with a 7-6(9), 6-7(5), 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Sam Querrey.
