Chela-Kubot Capture Bucharest Crown; Brown-Wassen Reach First Team Final

Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela and Lukasz Kubot of Poland won their first ATP World Tour doubles title together Saturday with as they saved two championship points to defeat Spanish No. 2 seeds Marcel Granollers and Santiago Ventura 6-2, 5-7, 13-11 in the BCR Open Romania final.

After squandering a 7-3 lead in the Match Tie-break, Chela and Kubot stared down defeat when they trailed 8-9 and 10-11 before rallying to win the final three points of the match and seal victory in one hour and 37 minutes.

“Juan and I signed up last minute,” explained Kubot. “It's great to play with one of the best clay-court players. Of course I'm sad that my usual doubles partner Oliver Marach is injured right now. I'm thankful that Juan played with me and that he kept up the great level in both singles and doubles."

Chela will now have the chance to complete a double sweep in Bucharest as he contests the singles final on Sunday against Pablo Andujar.

The victors received 250 ATP World Tour ranking points and €20,220, while runners-up Granollers and Ventura earned 150 ranking points and shared €10,620 in prize money. Granollers and Ventura were bidding for their second title together after winning the Chennai crown (d. Lu-Tipsarevic) in January.

Jamaican-Dutch pairing Dustin Brown and Rogier Wassen reached their first ATP World Tour doubles final together Saturday as they ousted top seeds and Barclays ATP World Tour Finals qualification contenders Wesley Moodie and Dick Norman 7-6(6), 6-3 at the Open de Moselle in Metz.

Brown and Wassen saved both break points they faced and converted their only chance in the second set to seal a tight victory in 74 minutes. The 25-year-old Brown is through to his first ATP World Tour final, while the more experienced Wassen, 34, will contest his 10th ATP World Tour final. The right-hander has a 4-5 record in finals, most recently titling at Amersfoort in 2008 with Frantisek Cermak.

Moodie and Norman, currently fifth in the 2010 ATP Doubles Team Rankings, were bidding to reach their first ATP World Tour final of the season together.

In the final Brown and Wassen will meet second-seeded Brazilians Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares, who received a walkover when Richard Gasquet and his partner, Edouard Roger-Vasselin, were forced to withdraw with Gasquet suffering from a fever.

Melo and Soares are through to their fourth ATP World Tour doubles final of the season. The Brazilians won their first team title in Nice (d. Bopanna-Qureshi) and finished runners-up in Auckland (l. to Daniell-Tecau) and Gstaad (l. to Brunstrom-Nieminen).
