Troicki Makes Strong Start; De Bakker Enjoys Winning Debut

Seventh seed Viktor Troicki made a strong start to his PTT Thailand Open campaign Monday, crushing Swiss Marco Chiudinelli 6-3, 6-1 to reach the second round of the ATP World Tour 250 hard-court tennis tournament in Bangkok.

The Serbian broke twice in the fifth and ninth games to secure a one-set lead in his first meeting with the No. 68-ranked Chiudinelli. He then capitalised on his momentum by racing to a 5-0 lead in the second set and clinched victory in just 64 minutes.

The 24-year-old Troicki reached his second career ATP World Tour final in Bangkok last year, losing out to Gilles Simon in the final after beating then-World No. 7 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semi-finals. This season, the Belgrade native has compiled a 26-26 match record, highlighted by semi-final showings in Doha (l. to Nadal) and New Haven (l. to Istomin).

Sixth seed Thiemo de Bakker marked his debut at the PTT Thailand Open with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over wild card Marc Lopez.The Dutch player improved to a 27-18 match record for the season as he struck 11 aces and broke serve five times from 12 opportunities to seal victory in just 66 minutes.

The 22 year old has posted two semi-final showings on the ATP World Tour this season, in Barcelona (l. to Soderling) and New Haven (l. to Stakhovsky), and is coming off a third-round effort at the US Open (l. to Soderling).

De Bakker next will face German Daniel Brands, who defeated Illya Marchenko 6-3, 6-4 to record his first ATP World Tour win since reaching the second round in New Haven last month.

Frenchman Florent Serra was also a winner on day one, coming from a set down to defeat Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili 6-7(1), 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and 42 minutes on his debut in the Thai capital.
