Third-seeded Austrian Jurgen Melzer, who reached the PTT Thailand Open semi-finals last year, knocked out World No. 85 Dudi Sela of Israel 6-3, 6-4 in 76 minutes on Wednesday in Bangkok. It was Melzer’s third win over Sela this year (also Roland Garros and a recent Davis Cup play-off tie).

Melzer, currently No. 13 in the South African Airways 2010 ATP Rankings, is compiling the best season of his career. He has a 42-21 match record on the season and has now reached 10 ATP World Tour quarter-finals (or better).

Fourth seed Ernests Gulbis saved four of five break points and hit 16 aces past Rainer Schuettler of Germany for a 7-6(4), 6-7(4), 6-4 victory in two hours and 51 minutes.

Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez avenged May’s Grand Prix Hassan II defeat to Florent Serra by beating the Frenchman 7-5, 6-7(3), 7-5 in two hours and 44 minutes. World No. 53 Garcia-Lopez, the AEGON International runner-up (l. to Llodra) in June, hit 17 aces. Serra, 29, struck 13 aces but could only convert 12 of 14 break point opportunities. He dropped to an 18-23 season record.

German Daniel Brands was unable to convert his three break points against sixth-seeded Dutchman Thiemo de Bakker, but still prevailed 7-6(2), 1-6, 7-6(7) in two hours and 12 minutes. De Bakker had fired 18 aces and won 80 per cent of his first serve points.

German Benjamin Becker was a first round winner on day three.
