Fyrstenberg-Matkowski Close On Kuala Lumpur Title Defence

Top seeds Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski are one win away from defending their title at the Malaysian Open, Kuala Lumpur 2010 after crushing Sergiy Stakhovsky and singles finalist Mikhail Youzhny 6-0, 6-1 Saturday in the semi-finals.

The Polish duo converted five of seven break points and won 20 of 21 points behind their first serve as they raced to victory in just 43 minutes. They are through to their second ATP World Tour final of the season after lifting the trophy in Eastbourne (d. Fleming-Skupski) in June.

Victory also boosts Fyrstenberg and Matkowski’s bid to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. They are currently 11th in the 2010 ATP Doubles Team Rankings, with the Top 8 teams to qualify for the year-end championships at The O2 in London.

In the final they will face second seeds Frantisek Cermak and Michal Mertinak, who defeated singles finalist Andrey Golubev and his partner, Denis Istomin, 6-3, 6-4. The Czech-Slovak duo broke serve in the sixth game to win the first set, and despite squandering an early lead in the second set, broke serve again in the seventh game before sealing victory in 72 minutes.

Cermak and Mertinak, who are currently 12th in the 2010 ATP Doubles Team Rankings and also chasing a place at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, reached their third ATP World Tour final of the season. They finished runners-up in Doha in January and Umag in July.
