Barclays ATP World Tour Finals hopefuls and No. 2 seeds Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi came through a tricky first-round match 6-2, 2-6, 10-3 against Sergiy Stakhovsky and Mikhail Youzhny Tuesday at the St. Petersburg Open.

Four places remain at the season finale in London. US Open finalists Bopanna and Qureshi began the week at No. 7 in year-to-date ATP Rankings, with the top eight teams qualifying.

Top seeds Frantisek Cermak and Michal Mertinak were dealt a blow in their bid to gain more crucial points, falling to Yen-Hsun Lu and Rainer Schuettler 7-6(5), 6-3 in the first round. The Czech-Slovakian duo, who recently won their first title of the season in Kuala Lumpur, are currently 12th in the latest team standings.

At the Open Sud de France, an ATP World Tour 250 indoor hard-court tennis tournament in Montpellier, top seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi opened their campaign with a tight 7-6(3), 7-6(3) victory over Brian Battistone and Andreas Siljestrom.  They next will face Australian-British tandem Stephen Huss and Ross Hutchins, who cruised past Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Gilles Simon 6-1, 6-2.

Fourth seeds Julian Knowle and Andy Ram advanced to the quarter-finals at the St. Petersburg Open after defeating Austrian wild cards Andreas Haider-Maurer and Nikolaus Moser 7-6(1), 6-4 in 87 minutes.
