Kukushkin Upsets Seventh Seed Chardy

World No. 88 Mikhail Kukushkin bested Jeremy Chardy for the second time in two weeks Monday as he upset the No. 7 seed 6-7(3), 6-1, 6-0 in the first round of the St. Petersburg Open. Last week, the Kazakhstani beat the No. 50-ranked Chardy in the first round in Moscow.

In an eventful first set, both players broke serve twice, with Chardy squandering a chance to serve for the set at 5-4, before the Frenchman clinched a one-set lead on the tie-break. He was to win only one more game, though, as Kukushkin raced to victory, dropping only seven points on serve in the final two sets and breaking serve six times.

The 22-year-old Kukushkin, who recently reached the PTT Thailand Open quarter-finals in Bangkok, will next challenge Teymuraz Gabashvili, who converted five of eight break point opportunities to beat Italian Filippo Volandri – 15 places higher than the Russian at No. 90 in the South African Airways 2010 ATP Rankings – 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in one hour and 50 minutes.

Russian wild card Igor Andreev did not fare as well as his countryman in his first round match, dropping serve five times in a 6-1, 7-5 loss to American Michael Russell. Former World No. 18 Andreev also bowed out in the first round last week in Moscow (l. to Kunitsyn).
