There are six second round matches on Thursday’s schedule at the St. Petersburg Open, led by top seed and 2004 champion Mikhail Youzhny, No. 4 Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei and No. 8 Victor Hanescu of Romania. All three are the top player from their respective country. In addition, Russian wild card Dmitry Tursunov and local qualifier Konstantin Kravchuk are trying to reach the quarter-finals.

In the first match on Centre Court, Illya Marchenko of Ukraine and Kravchuk meet for the first time on the ATP World Tour although they have split four other meetings (three in Challengers, one in Futures). Marchenko is trying to reach his fourth ATP World Tour quarter-final of the season and Kravchuk his first career quarter-final.

In the second match, the No. 2 Ukraine Alexandr Dolgopolov takes on German veteran Rainer Schuettler. In their only previous meeting at the Aachen Challenger four years ago, Schuettler won in three sets. Schuettler has a 12-7 mark in St. Petersburg and he reached the final in 2001 and semi-finals in 2003. Dolgopolov is aiming for his fourth ATP World Tour quarter-final or better this year and Schuettler his third.

In the third match, Lu, the top Asian player on the ATP World Tour at a career-high No. 34 this week, looks for his first win against Tursunov, who has won both previous meetings in straight sets. Lu is attempting to reach his third ATP World Tour level quarter-final of the year, his first since Wimbledon in July. Tursunov’s best ATP World Tour result this season was the quarter-finals in Tokyo (l. to Nadal) three weeks ago. 

In the evening session, Youzhny faces 20-year-old Russian qualifier Evgeny Donskoy for the first time. Youzhny, who is 21-7 lifetime in St. Petersburg, is the last Russian winner here in 2004.  He is looking for his ninth ATP World Tour quarter-final or better showing this year. He is 2-2 in finals. Donskoy is eyeing his first career ATP World Tour quarter-final.

On Court 1, there are two matches as Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu takes a 1-0 lead against German Benjamin Becker and Hanescu meets American qualifier Rajeev Ram for the first time.
