There are eight first round matches on Tuesday’s Swiss Indoors Basel schedule, including five on Centre Court. An action-packed day features No. 2 seed and reigning champion Novak Djokovic, No. 6 seed Marin Cilic, former World No. 3 and 2002 winner David Nalbandian and Swiss No. 3 Marco Chiudinelli.
In the first match on Centre Court, Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia looks for his second win in as many meetings against Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan. Both players are making their main draw debut in Basel and both have reached an ATP World Tour final this season, Tipsarevic in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and Istomin in New Haven.
In the second match, Frenchman Richard Gasquet aims for his second win against Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei, the top Asian player ranked a career-high No. 33 on the ATP World Tour. Gasquet reached the quarter-finals in his debut here last year while Lu is making his first appearance in Basel.
In the third match, Djokovic brings a 2-1 lead against 22-year-old Latvian Ernests Gulbis, who is making his Basel debut. Gulbis won the last meeting in the first round of Brisbane in January 2009. Gulbis captured his first ATP World Tour title in Delray Beach in February and Djokovic is 2-1 in finals this year.
In the evening session, Chiudinelli and Cilic square off the first time. Chiudinelli reached his first ATP World Tour semi-final in Basel last year and Cilic has repeated titles in Chennai in January and Zagreb in February.
In the final match, Czech qualifier Jan Hajek meets Nalbandian for the first time. Nalbandian has enjoyed success in Basel with a 22-5 match record, winning the title in 2002 and reaching the final three other times (2003-04, ’08).
