Doha Friday Preview
Doha, Qatar
by Greg Sharko
|07.01.2011
This is the first time since the inaugural year in 1993 at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open the top four seeds are in the semi-finals. That year No. 1 Stefan Edberg, No. 2 Goran Ivanisevic, No. 3 Boris Becker and No. 4 Andrei Cherkasov reached the semi-finals. Becker defeated Ivanisevic in the final. There's never been a No. 1-2 seeded final in Doha.

The last time the top four seeds reached the semi-finals in an ATP World Tour tournament was at the Rogers Cup in Toronto last summer. The remaining semi-finalists have combined to win 24 of 25 sets this week with Nadal the only player to drop a set.
In the first semi-final, No. 2 and 2005-06 champion Roger Federer takes a 2-1 mark (all on hard courts) against No. 3 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Federer won the last meeting 62 63 62 in the semi-finals at last year’s Australian Open en route to his 16th career Grand Slam title.
In the second semi-final, World No. 1 Rafael Nadal looks to even his record (4-5) against No. 4 seed and defending champion Nikolay Davydenko, who has won the past three encounters. This is their first meeting since last year’s final here where the Russian saved two match points and prevailed 06 76(8) 64.
Nadal is also in the doubles final with countryman Marc Lopez. They are trying to capture their second Doha title in three years on Friday as they face Italians Daniele Bracciali and Andreas Seppi.
