Aspelin-Knowle, Cermak-Friedl Win On Reunions

Karol Beck and Dudi Sela converted three of nine break point opportunities to beat second seeds Dustin Brown and Rogier Wassen 6-3, 7-5 in 72 minutes at the SA Tennis Open on Monday. Despite hitting eight aces, Brown and Wassen won just 34 per cent of points on return of serve.

Tomasz Bednarek and Michal Przysiezny also beat third seeds Johan Brunstrom and Ken Skupski 7-5, 4-6, 10-8 in 87 minutes. Both teams won exactly 70 points each.

Yen-Hsun Lu and Janko Tipsarevic required just 50 minutes to defeat Frenchmen Adrian Mannarino and Florent Serra 6-3, 6-0. The pair dropped just six points on serve.

At the PBZ Zagreb Indoors, No. 3 seeds Simon Aspelin and Julian Knowle teamed up for the first time in more than two years and cruised past Igor Kunitsyn and Ivan Ljubicic 6-2, 6-0 in 49 minutes. Aspelin and Knowle won the US Open title together in 2007, and had parted ways at the end of the 2008 season.

Israelis Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram, the 2008 Australian Open champions, also advanced with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Mischa Zverev.

The Movistar Open in Santiago also saw a reunion between old teammates, as Czechs Frantisek Cermak and Leos Friedl joined for a 6-3, 7-6(3) win over Santiago Giraldo and Daniel Munoz-De La Nava. Cermak and Friedl, two-time Movistar Open finalists, last played together in March 2008.

Also Monday, third seeds Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares snapped a five-match losing streak as they defeated Carlos Berlocq and Rui Machado 6-1, 6-4, and Chilean Nicolas Massu teamed up with Brazilian Joao Souza to edge Italians Fabio Fognini and Filippo Volandri 7-6(3), 7-6(7).
