Italian Filippo Volandri earned his first tour-level win of the 2011 season as he knocked out No. 8 seed Victor Hanescu of Romania 7-5, 6-1 on Monday at the Brasil Open, the second stop of the Latin America clay-court swing.

Volandri, a former World No. 25, won four of five break points and dropped serve once as he improved to a 3-1 head-to-head record against the 56th-ranked Hanescu. The two 29 year olds were facing off for the first time in six years.

Coming into Costa do Sauipe, Volandri had not won a match on the ATP World Tour since the final clay-court tournament of the 2010 season in September at Bucharest. He posted his best results on the Challenger circuit last year, winning two titles from four finals.
