Melzer-Petzschner End Murrays' Campaign; Melo-Soares Triumph At Brasil Open

Doubles

Falla, Malisse© Mike Rhodes Alejandro Falla and Xavier Malisse are through to the San Jose final.

Second seeds Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner held off British duo Andy Murray and Jamie Murray to reach the final of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament on Saturday with a 6-4, 6-4 victory.

Breaks were exchanged at the beginning of both sets, but it was the Austrian-German pairing that was able to break decisively in the seventh game of the opener and at the same stage in the second set to clinch victory in 73 minutes.

Melzer and Petzschner are through to their third tour-level final together, and their first since capturing the Wimbledon crown in July 2010 with victory over Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau. They have a perfect record in doubles finals together, having also triumphed in Zagreb (d. Clement-O. Rochus) just over a year ago.

The Murray brothers were looking to reach their first final since winning at the Valencia Open 500 (d. Bhupathi-Mirnyi) in November last year.

In the final Melzer and Petzschner will face fourth seeds Michael Llodra and Nenad Zimonjic, who received a walkover through the semi-finals when Tomas Berdych and Philipp Kohlschreiber were forced to withdraw due to Berdych suffering from flu.

Second seeds Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares won the Brasil Open 2011 doubles title after a 7-6(4), 6-3 win over Pablo Andujar and Daniel Gimeno-Traver in Saturday's final. The Brazilians, who also won the Santiago title one week earlier, improved to 3-3 lifetime in ATP World Tour doubles finals as a team. Melo claimed his ninth doubles title and Soares collected his fifth.

“It feels amazing, to win in our house, in this great city," Soares said. "The crowed was unbelievable and the house was packed. It’s just a great city, to have the opportunity to play in Sauipe and to win it is truly amazing. We are both very happy.”

In San Jose Americans Scott Lipsky and Rajeev Ram advanced to the final with a 7-5, 6-3 win over fourth seeds Santiago Gonzalez and Philipp Marx. Last week the pair reached the SA Tennis Open final in Johannesburg.

Colombia's Alejandro Falla and Belgian Xavier Malisse, making their team debut this week, advanced to the final after they defeated top seeds Mark Knowles of the Bahamas and Slovakian Michal Mertinak 4-6, 7-5, 10-4.
