Eltingh-Haarhuis Return Halted By Top Seeds

Top-seeded Poles Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski beat Jacco Eltingh and Paul Haarhuis, the 1997-98 titlists, on Monday at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam.

Fyrstenberg and Matkowski beat the veteran Dutchmen, who last played together in 1998 and were making a temporary return to the ATP World Tour, 6-3, 6-2 in just 62 minutes for a place in the quarter-finals.

Eltingh and Haarhuis won 39 titles together, including six major titles. They became the first duo in the Open Era to complete a career Grand Slam by winning the 1998 Championships at Wimbledon, dethroning five-time defending champions Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde in the final.

Tomas Berdych and Philipp Kohlschreiber scraped past Sergiy Stakhovsky and Mikhail Youzhny 7-5, 3-6, 12-10 in 86 minutes. The Czech-German duo, who first teamed up 18 months ago at the 2009 Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, hit five aces and won 68 per cent of service points.

No. 4 seeds Pablo Cuevas and Eduardo Schwank advanced with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Nicolas Almagro and Juan Ignacio Chela in first-round action at the Brasil Open in Costa do Sauipe. Meanwhile, youngsters Richard Berankis and Kei Nishikori edged Johan Brunstrom and Travis Parrott 6-7(4), 6-0, 10-6 at the at the SAP Open in San Jose.
