ROTTERDAM PREVIEW –  NINE OF TOP 20 IN OUTSTANDING FIELD; ELTINGH-HAARHUIS RETURN

The first ATP World Tour 500 tournament of the season features an impressive line-up, which includes five of the Top 10 players and nine of Top 20 overall, led by top seed and reigning champion Robin Soderling.

The Swede is a career-high No. 4 in the South African Airways 2011 ATP Rankings. Other seeds are: No. 2 Andy Murray, who is coming off his second straight Australian Open runner-up result, No. 3  David Ferrer, No. 4  Tomas Berdych, No. 5 Jurgen Melzer, who on Jan. 31 broke the Top 10 (now 11), No. 6 and ‘07 champ Mikhail Youzhny, No. 7 Ivan Ljubicic and No. 8 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Seven of the seeds have reached the quarter-finals or better in the past in Rotterdam.

In addition, two of the best Dutchmen to ever play on the ATP World Tour, Jacco Eltingh and Paul Haarhuis, make a temporary return. They last played together in 1998 and they closed that season by winning the ATP World Tour Doubles Finals. They also won the title here in their last two appearances, in 1997-98. They headline Monday night’s schedule against the top-seeded Polish duo of Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski.

On Monday’s schedule, Melzer, 2008 champion Michael Llodra  and two Dutch wild cards are in action. In the first match on Centre Court, Croat Marin Cilic takes on German qualifier Mischa Zverev followed by former Top 10 Nikolay Davydenko, who owns a 4-2 lead against Llodra.  In the third match on, Serb Viktor Troicki meets wild card Thomas Schoorel. In the evening session, Eltingh-Haarhuis will have the home crowd behind them and then Melzer plays wild card Jesse Huta Galung.

The second clay court tournament of the season on the ATP World Tour takes place this week at the Brasil Open in Costa do Sauipe featuring top seed and 2008 champion Nicolas Almagro, No. 2 seed Albert Montanes of Spain and No. 3/2009 finalist Thomaz Bellucci. SAN JOSE PREVIEW – DEFENDING CHAMP VERDASCO, MONFILS, QUERREY LEAD SAP Open

The first North American tournament on the ATP World Tour, the SAP Open, gets underway Monday at the HP Pavilion in San Jose with an international field assembled. 

The top eight seeds come from eight different countries, led by World No. 9 and reigning champ Fernando Verdasco, who is making his second Bay Area visit. Other seeds are: No. 2 Gael Monfils, who is making his San Jose debut, No. 3 Sam Querrey, No. 4 Xavier Malisse of Belgium, No. 5 Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan, No. 6 Benjamin Becker of Germany, No. 7 Lleyton Hewitt of Australia and No. 8 Kei Nishikori of Japan. Hewitt, a two-time World No. 1, won the title in 2002 and was runner-up in ’06. 

In Monday’s action, last year’s quarter-finalist Michael Russell and qualifier Alex Kuznetsov open the tournament followed by Colombian qualifier Robert Farah and wild card Tim Smyczek and qualifier Roman Borvanov vs. Istomin, a semi-finalist here last year.

In the final two matches of the day session, Germany’s Dustin Brown and American Donald Young meet for the first time while wild card James Blake makes his season debut against qualifier Jesse Levine. 

In the evening session, Monfils plays 14-time Grand Slam winner Pete Sampras in an exhibition match followed by Hewitt and German Bjorn Phau.
