World No. 1 duo Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan made a strong start to their Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters campaign on Wednesday, cruising past Ernests Gulbis and Viktor Troicki 6-3, 6-1 in 46 minutes in their opening second-round match on Wednesday.

The Americans are coming off their second tour-level title of the season in Houston (d. Isner-Querrey) and triumphed at the Australian Open (d. Bhupathi-Paes) in January. They are three-time former finalists at the Monte-Carlo Country Club and lifted the winners’ trophy in 2007 (d. Benneteau-Gasquet).

Second seeds Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor enjoyed a successful team debut in Monte-Carlo as they defeated Richard Gasquet and Ivan Ljubicic 6-2, 7-5 in 62 minutes to reach the third round. The Belarusian-Canadian team joined forces full time in 2011 and have quickly enjoyed success, winning their first ATP World Tour team title in Memphis (d. Butorac-Rojer) and reaching the final in Miami (l. to Bhupathi-Paes).

Fourth seeds Lukasz Kubot and Oliver Marach survived a scare to book their place in the third round, overcoming French wild card pairing Julien Benneteau and Jeremy Chardy 7-6(5), 4-6, 12-10 in just under two hours.

In remaining first-round action, Australian Open semi-finalists Eric Butorac and Jean-Julien Rojer defeated Spaniards Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Albert Montanes 4-6, 6-4, 10-8, and French tandem Gael Monfils and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga celebrated their team debut by beating Lukas Dlouhy and Janko Tipsarevic 6-4, 7-5.

South American pairing Juan Ignacio Chela and Bruno Soares caused an upset as they ousted eighth seeds and 2010 Wimbledon runners-up Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau 6-4, 6-4 in 66 minutes in the second round. They are making their team debut this week at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 clay-court tennis tournament.
