Bryans Extend Winning Streak

ATP World Tour 2011 Season: Week 16

World No. 1 duo Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan won their eighth successive match on Thursday, but were made to work hard for their place in the quarter-finals of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell. The top-seeded Americans needed a Match Tie-break to overcome Frantisek Cermak and Andy Ram 6-2, 6-7(4), 10-5 in their opening match at the ATP World Tour 500 clay-court tennis tournament.

The Bryans came into Barcelona on the back of consecutive clay-court title wins in the past two weeks at the US Men’s Clay Court Championship (d. Isner-Querrey) in Houston and the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters (d. Chela-Soares). They also triumphed at the Australian Open (d. Bhupathi-Paes) in January and are chasing a third Barcelona title, having lifted the trophy in 2003 (d. Haggard-Koenig) and 2008 (d. Fyrstenberg-Matkowski).

In the quarter-finals the Bryans will face eighth seeds Mark Knowles and Michal Mertinak, who broke serve twice to defeat Eric Butorac and Jean-Julien Rojer 6-4, 6-4 in 70 minutes.

Third seeds Jurgen Melzer and Nenad Zimonjic, playing just their second tournament together, were dealt a blow as they bowed out to Santiago Gonzalez and Scott Lipsky 6-3, 6-2 in their opening second-round match.  Mexico’s Gonzalez and American Lipsky are teaming together for the first time this week.

Another seeded team to be upset in their opening second-round match was No. 6 Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi, who lost to Spanish wild cards Pablo Andujar and Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-2, 7-6(3) in 66 minutes.

Seventh seeds Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau made an impressive start on their Barcelona debut as they dismissed Marc Lopez and Juan Monaco in just 52 minutes. The 2010 Wimbledon runners-up broke serve six times as they bounced back from the first-round defeat (l. to Chela-Soares) they suffered in Monte-Carlo last week.
